When you travel, do you use a guidebook so that you're well prepared, or do you go without much prior knowledge so that you're surprised?

Coming from a military environment I'm inclined, by training, to use a guidebook.
Soldiers don't really like surprises.... especially when entering unexplored terrain.
Left to my own devices... I prefer to wander about and be surprised.
This is my first blog.
Right now, though, I'm tired and don't feel much like writing, so I'm gonna postpone beginning this until tomorrow.
